Flashscore, the world’s leading live scores app, has unveiled its Follow Player functionality, described as the company’s “flagship enhancement of 2025”. The new feature allows fans to receive real-time updates on their favourite football stars, further deepening the way fans engage with live sports.
With more than 100 million monthly users and 180+ million app downloads worldwide, Flashscore continues to expand its offering, introducing a tool designed to reflect changing fan behaviour, where supporters increasingly follow individual players as closely as clubs.
Real-Time Player Tracking
Fans can now add up to 100 players to their favourites list and receive instant updates including:
- Starting lineup appearances
- Goals scored
- Substitutions
- Red cards
- Post-match player ratings
Upcoming updates will extend notifications to assists, yellow cards, missed penalties, and transfer alerts. Beyond football, basketball and hockey will be added later this year, making Follow Player a true multi-sport experience.
Alongside notifications, Flashscore has expanded its player-centric statistics, including expected goals (xG), passing accuracy, and duels won, enhancing data depth for fans who want more than just scorelines.
Cristiano Ronaldo Tops the Global Rankings
Flashscore’s database now features nearly 590,000 players. Within the two months, 1.3 million fans have already activated Follow Player, averaging five players each, resulting in around 6.5 million player favourites.
The global most-followed players are led by Cristiano Ronaldo, followed by Kylian Mbappé, Lionel Messi, Lamine Yamal, and Raphina.
Among UK fans, Mo Salah ranks fifth, followed by Chelsea’s Cole Palmer and Liverpool’s new signing Alexander Isak.
Fan Demand, Market Relevance & New Engagement Layer
According to Tomáš Pondělík, Chief Product Officer at Flashscore, the feature was driven by long-term user demand and a shift in audience behaviour:
“Fandom is evolving. We’re seeing a significant shift from fans following only their favourite teams to a deeper interest in individual players. Two of our five identified user personas, particularly younger generations, are more player-focused. We’ve had Follow Player on the roadmap for some time, but we wanted to launch it at the right moment, when our player data was the strongest and fan expectations were clear.”
The company also highlighted competition and market trends, stressing the need to remain relevant while delivering best-in-class user experiences.
Pondělík added:
“Follow Player isn’t just about match notifications, it’s a new layer of engagement and retention. After matches, users return to check post-match ratings, transfer alerts, or stats. Soon we’ll add news notifications, creating a 360-degree view of every player. This is just the beginning.”
Early Adoption & Growth Potential
Since its soft launch, Follow Player has already surpassed 1 million individual users globally. Flashscore reports users are increasingly following multiple players across clubs and leagues, signalling a strong appetite for multi-player tracking and deeper personalisation.
The company also confirmed that retired legends like Ronaldo will continue to be featured in the app, with fans still able to receive updates such as news and historical insights.
Expansion Beyond Football
This October, Flashscore will roll out Follow Player for basketball and ice hockey, with plans to support more sports over the next two years. By 2026–27, major tournaments such as the Basketball World Cup will benefit from enhanced player engagement tools.
Strategic Partnerships & Charity Game Launch
The official unveiling of Follow Player coincided with last month’s Legends Charity Game between Portugal Legends and World Legends in Lisbon. Flashscore was the official strategic partner of the match, delivering live updates via Opta data from Stats Perform.
Organised by Sport Global, the event aimed to raise €1 million for charities and served as the curtain-raiser for the SBC Summit iGaming Conference.
Looking Ahead
Flashscore’s long-term vision is to stay the most trusted live sports destination, balancing ease of use, high-quality data, and complex insights on demand. Beyond affiliate partnerships, the company is exploring new revenue models such as Flashscore+ (ad-free experience) and collaborations with broadcasters like DAZN.
Pondělík concluded:
“Our focus remains on delivering smarter, more relevant notifications and deepening personalisation. Whether it’s following a team, a player, or an entire competition, Flashscore is building the most complete live sports companion for every fan.”
