PrizePicks, the Atlanta-based fantasy sports operator, has been officially granted an interactive fantasy sports operating licence by the New York State Gaming Commission (NYSGC). This development allows the company to resume operations in New York after more than 18 months away, signifying a key moment for the legal evolution of fantasy sports in the U.S.
The approval follows a 2024 settlement between PrizePicks and the NYSGC, where the operator agreed to repay revenues generated from prohibited activities between 2019 and 2023. The company has since restructured its peer-to-peer contests to align fully with New York’s fantasy sports regulations, introduced in 2023, which prohibit prop-style contests.
Mike Ybarra, CEO of PrizePicks, expressed excitement about returning to New York, noting that the state’s passionate sports community is eager for innovative and compliant gaming experiences. Jason Barclay, Chief Legal Officer, added that the company worked closely with regulators to ensure its new offering met all requirements.
With New York now the 16th jurisdiction to formally recognise PrizePicks’ contests as games of skill, the decision reinforces the company’s position as a leader in compliant fantasy gaming. The move also demonstrates a growing trend of cooperation between innovative gaming operators and state regulators seeking clarity and structure in the evolving iGaming environment.
