In a move that could transform New Zealand’s online gambling landscape, the government has introduced a new bill aimed at regulating the sector, which currently operates without formal oversight.

The bill, led by Minister of Internal Affairs Brooke van Velden, seeks to impose strict licensing requirements on operators, ensuring that online gambling is conducted responsibly, with built-in player safety and harm reduction strategies.

Among the key provisions:
🔹 Up to 15 online gambling licenses will be issued through a competitive auction process.
🔹 Operators will be required to contribute to the Problem Gambling Levy, which funds treatment and prevention programs.
🔹 Strict advertising rules, prohibiting marketing to minors.
🔹 Fines of up to NZ$5 million for violations of the new law.

This legislation could have a huge impact on the market, as it offers a path forward for domestic online casino platforms while holding offshore operators accountable. As the bill moves to the select committee stage, the government is inviting public feedback, offering industry stakeholders, citizens, and advocacy groups the opportunity to weigh in on the new regulations.

This could be a game-changer for iGaming in New Zealand how will this affect the future of the market?
