Mohegan Appoints Joe Soper as VP to Lead Sports & Entertainment Strategy Across Its Growing Portfolio
Mohegan has appointed Joe Soper as Vice President of Sports & Entertainment, consolidating oversight of live programming across its US and Canadian resort portfolio.
Soper will lead entertainment strategy at Mohegan Sun while coordinating booking and programming across Mohegan Pennsylvania and the Niagara Falls properties, including Fallsview Casino Resort and Casino Niagara.
The move brings a key non-gaming revenue vertical under unified leadership as integrated resorts face increasing pressure to drive higher yield from live events, premium content and experience-led spend.
Soper returns to an operational role after serving on the Mohegan Tribal Council. He previously spent 15 years at Mohegan Sun in finance and entertainment, including as Director of Sports & Entertainment, where he played a role in expanding the venue’s event calendar and supporting cross-property programming.
Integrated booking strategy to unlock portfolio leverage
The appointment formalises a shift toward fully integrated entertainment management across Mohegan’s footprint. Centralised oversight is expected to strengthen negotiating leverage with major promoters and agencies such as Live Nation, Creative Artists Agency and William Morris Endeavor, as well as sports content partners like WWE.
For operators, this model creates three immediate advantages:
- More efficient routing of tours across multiple properties
- Greater access to exclusive or early-window performances
- Improved utilisation of midweek and shoulder dates
At venue level, Mohegan Sun Arena-hosting more than 100 events annually-remains the flagship asset. However, the greater commercial upside lies in distributing premium content across secondary locations to lift overall portfolio returns and reduce reliance on a single venue.
Extending impact beyond land-based operations
The strategic shift also feeds into Mohegan’s broader customer ecosystem, including Mohegan Digital. Live entertainment continues to act as a key acquisition and retention lever, particularly as operators look to connect physical experiences with digital engagement and loyalty programmes.
While Mohegan has not disclosed specific performance targets, the role typically carries responsibility for:
- Driving event-led visitation growth
- Increasing non-gaming revenue contribution
- Expanding partnership monetisation across ticketing, sponsorship and media
This alignment between physical programming and digital channels is becoming more critical as operators seek to maximise lifetime customer value across touchpoints.
Industry shift toward controlled entertainment pipelines
Across North America, casino operators are placing greater emphasis on owning or controlling entertainment pipelines as competition intensifies for premium acts and touring inventory. Managing venues in isolation is increasingly being replaced by centralised booking strategies designed to protect margins and ensure consistent access to high-value content.
Soper’s appointment reflects this broader shift, positioning Mohegan to compete more effectively on talent access, scheduling control and programming scale across its cross-border portfolio.
