The Northern Territory Racing and Wagering Commission (NTRWC), which regulates many of Australia’s largest online betting operators, has announced a temporary suspension on accepting gifts and corporate hospitality from gambling companies. The move comes amid growing concerns about the regulator’s relationship with the industry it oversees.

Chair Alastair Shields confirmed that commissioners have stopped accepting perks such as event tickets while a formal code of conduct is being developed. The forthcoming code will define clear guidelines for managing hospitality, conflicts of interest, and governance standards to ensure impartial oversight.

The development follows reports that senior NTRWC officials had accepted hospitality from wagering firms, triggering a government-led review of regulatory practices. The Department of Tourism and Hospitality has stated that this review will focus on conflict management, gift acceptance, and eligibility standards for commission members, with findings expected early next year.

Shields clarified that while racehorse ownership remains permissible under the Racing and Wagering Act 2024, all potential conflicts are disclosed, recorded, and managed transparently. The regulator aims to enhance accountability while maintaining compliance with existing integrity rules.

This initiative reflects a broader shift within Australia’s gambling governance landscape toward stronger transparency, independence, and ethical responsibility. As the new code of conduct nears completion, industry observers view this move as an important step in reinforcing public confidence and ensuring the continued integrity of regulatory oversight in the online betting sector.
