Two Canadian senators have formally urged Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to implement a nationwide ban on sports betting advertising, citing heightened public health concerns tied to the rapid growth of single-event wagering. Their letter, supported by 40 additional senators, argues that the volume of betting promotions since the 2021 amendments to Bill C-218 has reached levels that merit immediate national action. Research referenced in the appeal shows that gambling advertising now accounts for approximately 21% of a standard sports broadcast, exposing viewers to betting messages several times per minute. The senators warn that this saturation encourages Canadians to turn their mobile devices into “pocket-sized casinos.”

Mental health professionals have echoed these concerns. Halifax counselling therapist Elizabeth Stephen reports increasing numbers of clients affected by betting-related triggers during sports broadcasts. She notes that younger viewers are particularly vulnerable, as their interests and decision-making abilities are still evolving. Some have described difficulty enjoying sports due to the disruptive frequency of gambling advertisements.

Although Canada has previously imposed restrictions, including prohibiting the use of sports personalities in betting promotions, the senators argue that these steps are insufficient. They compare the current situation to past public health campaigns targeting tobacco advertising, suggesting that a comprehensive ban may be necessary to curb harm.

Political momentum around regulatory reform is growing. Charlottetown MP Sean Casey has expressed support for the concerns raised and pointed to the ongoing progress of Bill S-211, which proposes a national framework for sports betting advertising. While the bill aims to introduce structured guidelines, lawmakers continue to debate whether broader federal intervention is required. The senators maintain that decisive action is essential to reduce opportunities for operators to exploit vulnerable individuals.
