Online Gambling Tax in New Zealand Now 16 Percent

The New Zealand government has announced a 4% increase in its Offshore Gambling Duty, raising the rate from 12% to 16% and directing all additional revenue exclusively toward community funding. The policy, introduced under the Online Casino Gambling Bill by Minister of Internal Affairs Brooke van Velden, represents a dual commitment to responsible gaming and social development.

Minister van Velden confirmed that while the reform broadens the financial reach of regulated gambling, it does not compromise the country’s stringent harm-prevention framework. Licensed operators will be subject to strict safeguards, including spending limits, age verification, and player protection tools, ensuring that consumer safety remains paramount.

The bill also aims to close regulatory gaps by requiring all online casino operators to obtain New Zealand licenses, bringing offshore platforms within the scope of national oversight.
