VGW, the operator behind popular social gaming platforms Chumba Casino and Global Poker, has announced it will discontinue its dual-currency sweepstakes model in West Virginia. The phased shutdown begins on November 11, 2025, when players will lose access to Sweeps Coin collection through purchases, bonuses, or mail-in requests. By November 18, Sweeps Coins will no longer be usable for promotional play, and by November 25, redemption will close entirely. Any remaining coins after this date will hold no value.

The decision follows increasing regulatory scrutiny of sweepstakes-style casinos across multiple U.S. jurisdictions. State regulators have questioned whether these models which use Sweeps Coins exchangeable for prizes too closely resemble real-money gambling. A VGW spokesperson confirmed the company aims to ensure players are fully informed and that the transition remains smooth.

Although Sweeps Coin play will cease, VGW will continue offering free-to-play Gold Coin gaming, allowing users to enjoy their favorite titles without real-money elements.

West Virginia joins a growing list of states, including New York, Connecticut, and Louisiana, that have imposed similar restrictions or outright bans. Earlier this year, VGW also withdrew from the Canadian market, further signaling a strategic refocus amid changing compliance environments.

The move highlights the evolving nature of regulatory frameworks around social and sweepstakes gaming. As oversight increases, operators across the industry are re-evaluating their models to ensure compliance and long-term sustainability.
