Switzerland has announced the launch of a new nationwide study aimed at providing an updated and comprehensive picture of gambling behaviour across the country. The initiative, led jointly by the Federal Gaming Board and the Intercantonal Gambling Supervisory Authority, will run throughout 2026, with final results expected in autumn 2027.

The study forms part of Switzerland’s long-established monitoring framework, which has supported gambling regulation with empirical evidence for more than a decade. Data collection will be carried out by the Federal Statistical Office through a nationwide survey, while analysis and interpretation will be handled by the Swiss Institute for Addiction and Health Research, a specialist body in behavioural risk and public health.

The research will examine how players interact with regulated gambling products, including participation frequency, preferred channels, and product usage. It will also assess the prevalence of at-risk and problematic gambling behaviour, going beyond raw participation data to explore the social and behavioural dynamics behind gambling activity.

Authorities intend to use the findings as a practical tool for regulatory and supervisory decision-making. The results will help refine prevention strategies, strengthen consumer protection measures, and enhance market oversight in a sector shaped by digitalisation and technological change.

The study operates within Switzerland’s gambling framework established by the Federal Act on Gambling, which came into force in 2019. The legislation harmonised regulation across casinos, lotteries, and betting, while reinforcing player protection and blocking unauthorised operators.

With publication scheduled for 2027, the study is expected to become a key reference point for regulators, operators, and policymakers, supporting Switzerland’s balanced approach to market development, public health, and regulatory integrity.
