Exclusive: Cybersecurity Is No Longer Optional: Marzia Turrini on AI, Compliance and the Future of iGaming
The global iGaming industry is growing rapidly through digital platforms, AI innovation, and evolving player expectations.
But alongside this growth, cybersecurity, compliance, and operational resilience are becoming increasingly important for operators, suppliers, and regulators alike. In an exclusive interview with iGaming News Today, Marzia shared insights on leadership, cyber defense, AI governance, and the future of gaming through 2026.
Q1. Can you share your leadership journey and experience in the gaming industry?
Marzia:
I have spent 23 years in the gaming industry, working across both land-based and iGaming sectors. During this time, I have seen the industry evolve significantly, especially with the shift towards digital platforms and technology-led growth. Moving from land-based gaming into iGaming required adaptability, continuous learning, and the ability to evolve with market demands.
I have also worked with operators, providers, and regulators, which has given me a broad understanding of the industry from different perspectives. My 14 years with BMM have provided valuable long-term experience and industry insight.
Q2. What leadership qualities are important in today’s gaming industry?
Marzia:
Diversity, determination, and continuous learning are very important leadership qualities. The gaming industry moves quickly, so leaders need to stay flexible, open-minded, and ready to develop new skills.
It is also important for women in the industry to support each other and encourage more female leadership. Technical knowledge is becoming increasingly valuable, especially with the rise of AI and new technologies.
Q3. How important is cybersecurity today?
Marzia:
Cybersecurity, or what I prefer to call cyber defense, is one of the biggest priorities for gaming companies today. It is about protecting systems, operations, and player data, not only meeting compliance requirements.
It has moved from being a nice-to-have function to a daily necessity, especially with regulations such as NIS2 in Europe. No system is completely safe, so businesses must focus on strong detection tools and fast response measures to reduce risks.
Q4. What is your view on compliance in gaming?
Marzia:
Compliance can sometimes feel like a necessary evil, but it is essential for the reputation and long-term success of the industry. Strong compliance helps fight illegal gambling, builds trust with players, and creates confidence with governments and regulators.
Well-regulated markets perform better because they create a safer and more sustainable environment for everyone involved.
Q5. How is AI shaping the gaming sector?
Marzia:
AI has strong potential to improve several areas of gaming, including product innovation, testing quality, and overall operational efficiency. I believe businesses can use AI to work smarter, improve internal processes, and enhance customer experiences.
At the same time, we must understand that right now, there is a lack of global governance over AI. Stronger regulatory frameworks, particularly in Europe and the U.S., will be important to ensure risks are managed properly while still allowing innovation.
Q6. What is your outlook for iGaming through 2026?
Marzia:
The iGaming market remains healthy and resilient, especially when compared with some land-based sectors. However, the geopolitical uncertainty may create some uncertainty in the market, which could delay product launches or investment decisions.
Despite these challenges, I’m very optimistic about the long-term outlook and expect iGaming to continue growing through 2026, provided companies remain adaptable and aware of changing global conditions.
