Allwyn Appoints Fredrik Ögren as Group Chief Technology Officer | iGaming News Today

Allwyn AG has appointed Fredrik Ögren as its Group Chief Technology Officer, placing an experienced gaming technology leader at the head of its entire technology function. Ögren joins the Lucerne-based, lottery-led gaming entertainment company from Betsson Group, where he spent the last five years as Chief Technology Officer.

The appointment, comes with a reshaping of Allwyn’s wider technology leadership. Ögren reports to Kresimir Spajic, CEO of Allwyn Digital, and takes responsibility for shaping and delivering the Group’s technology strategy across its markets and central functions.

What Fredrik Ögren brings to Allwyn’s technology strategy

Ögren’s remit at Allwyn is broad. He will be responsible for creating a more connected and efficient technology ecosystem, one designed to support growth across the Group, strengthen Allwyn’s position in its markets and improve the customer experience. In practice, that means working alongside teams across Allwyn’s individual markets and its central functions to drive innovation, build out platform capabilities and support the continued development of products.

His background fits the brief. During five years as CTO at Betsson Group, Ögren led the company’s technology strategy, oversaw the evolution of large-scale platforms and supported international growth across multiple regulated markets. That experience of running technology transformation at scale is precisely what Allwyn has pointed to as the reason for the hire.

How Allwyn has restructured its gaming technology leadership

The more revealing detail sits underneath the headline appointment. Brett Cross, who had been serving as interim CTO, moves into the newly created role of CTO, Global Lottery & Deputy Group CTO, and will report to Ögren.

That sets up a two-tier technology leadership structure. Ögren takes the Group-wide view, while Cross holds a dedicated remit over the lottery business, which remains Allwyn’s core. Creating a distinct Global Lottery technology role, rather than folding lottery into a single Group function, suggests Allwyn wants its lottery operations and its broader digital ambitions managed as related but separate priorities.

What Allwyn’s leadership said about the appointment

Fredrik Ögren, Group Chief Technology Officer, Allwyn, said:
“I am thrilled to be joining Allwyn at such an exciting stage in its growth journey. Technology plays a critical role in creating great player experiences, enabling innovation and supporting long-term business success. I look forward to working with colleagues across the Group to build an even more connected technology ecosystem, strengthen our capabilities and help deliver the next phase of Allwyn’s growth.”

Kresimir Spajic, CEO, Allwyn Digital, said:
“We’re delighted to welcome Fredrik to Allwyn. He brings deep industry experience, strong technical expertise and a proven track record of leading technology transformation across global organisations. His appointment is an important step in building a more scalable technology platform across the Group, helping us deliver even better experiences for our customers and partners.”

Spajic also thanked Cross for his leadership as interim Group CTO and congratulated him on the Global Lottery role, describing the pair as a strong technology leadership team for Allwyn’s next phase of growth.

What Does This Appointment Mean for Allwyn’s Digital Growth?

Senior technology hires tend to tell you where a company is spending its attention, and Allwyn’s choice points towards scale and a more connected Group platform. Bringing in a CTO who built platforms at Betsson, then giving lottery its own dedicated technology leadership, reads as a structure built for digital growth without pulling focus from the lottery operations at the group’s core. Whether a single connected technology ecosystem speeds up product development across such different businesses is the question worth watching as Allwyn moves into its next phase.
