Jamul Casino Resort Appoints Chris Kelley as CEO | iGaming News Today

Jamul Casino Resort has named Chris Kelley as its new Chief Executive Officer, placing a gaming and hospitality veteran at the head of a property that recently completed one of the most significant expansions in the San Diego market. Kelley brings more than 20 years of leadership experience across the hospitality, gaming and entertainment industries, with a background spanning casino operations, resort development and strategic growth.

He arrives most recently from Hard Rock Casino Tejon, where he served as President, and previously held several executive leadership positions at MGM Resorts International. Having started his career in San Diego, Kelley also brings a direct understanding of the Southern California gaming market, which sits at the centre of the property’s competitive position.

Why the Jamul Casino Resort leadership change matters now

Leadership appointments are routine across the gaming industry, but the timing here gives this one more weight. Jamul has reshaped what it offers over the past year, and the person steering the next phase will influence how well that investment carries forward. Kelley takes over a property that has just moved into a new tier of guest offering, which raises the stakes on operational execution.

What Chris Kelley brings to the San Diego gaming market

Kelley’s track record centres on casino operations and resort development, the two disciplines most relevant to Jamul’s current position. His tenure as President of Hard Rock Casino Tejon and his earlier executive roles at MGM Resorts International give him experience across both regional and large-scale operators. His San Diego origins add local market knowledge that is difficult to acquire from outside the region.

How the appointment fits Jamul Casino Resort’s expansion

The hire follows a substantial build-out. In August 2025, the property officially transitioned to Jamul Casino Resort with the debut of a $270 million, 200-room luxury hotel tower. The 16-storey boutique hotel added new restaurants, retail, a rooftop pool and a full-service spa and salon, and the property achieved the AAA Four Diamond designation. That sits on top of an existing $430 million property with nearly 1,700 slot machines, more than 50 live table games and a dedicated poker room.

What the Board mandate means for Jamul’s gaming operations

In his new role, Kelley will work closely with the Jamul Indian Village Development Corporation Board to support future development opportunities. JIVDC, a wholly owned enterprise of the Jamul Indian Village Tribe, has owned and operated the property since it opened in 2016. The reference to future development suggests the expansion completed in 2025 is a stage rather than an endpoint, though the announcement did not set out specific projects.

What Comes Next for the San Diego Casino Resort Market?

Jamul employs more than 1,500 people and positions itself as the closest casino resort to downtown San Diego, the nation’s eighth-largest city, which places real competitive pressure on how its premium-resort phase is managed. Kelley’s immediate focus looks set to be turning the hotel tower and Four Diamond designation into sustained traffic and spend. For operators watching the Southern California market, the signal is that Jamul intends to compete on resort quality alongside its gaming floor, and the next development phase will test how far that approach runs.
