Why BetMakers’ margin expansion matters to racing-technology operators
For operators choosing platform partners, financial durability is part of the decision. A supplier moving from a 10.0% adjusted EBITDA margin to 23.8% in a single year signals a business whose economics are strengthening. Gross margin tells a similar story, rising to 69.1% from a restated 63.9% and now sitting just short of the company’s stated 70% long-term goal.
These are the metrics a B2B audience watches, because they indicate whether a vendor can keep investing in its product while staying profitable.
What BetMakers’ Q1 FY27 revenue and EBITDA figures show
Revenue of A$24.7m against the prior year’s A$21.2m is the headline growth. Underneath it, adjusted EBITDA of A$5.9m came from a A$3.5m increase in revenue converting into a A$3.8m uplift in earnings, so more of each additional dollar of revenue reached the bottom line than left it.
BetMakers attributed the growth to its digital customer base, citing commercial momentum behind its Apollo platform and a technology roadmap of further enhancements. The company also pointed to Global Tote contributing cloud and cost efficiencies that supported the gross margin improvement.
How BetMakers’ falling operating expenses drove operating leverage
The clearest evidence of the model scaling sits in the cost line. The company reported that operating expenses fell even as revenue grew 16.3%, despite Q1 FY27 opex now including LVDC operating costs that were absent from the prior period. Capitalised staff costs were A$2.0m in the quarter, up from A$1.4m a year earlier.
When revenue rises while costs hold or fall, growth flows disproportionately to profit. That is the mechanism behind a 16.3% revenue rise producing a 176% EBITDA jump, and it is the most important read in the quarter for anyone assessing the company’s trajectory.
How BetMakers’ cash position held up after the Monmouth Park payment
Operating cash flow was a positive A$2.8m, a A$4.0m swing from the negative A$1.2m of a year earlier. That figure was achieved after the yearly true-up payment to Monmouth Park under its minimum guarantee, a US$2.0m outflow during the quarter.
Unrestricted cash still closed higher, at A$16.0m, a A$0.4m increase quarter on quarter despite that large annual payment. The company said it continues to work towards consistent free-cash-flow generation as the business scales.
BetMakers’ progress against its long-term EBITDA and margin goals
Across FY23 to the Q1 FY27 annualised run-rate, BetMakers reported that adjusted EBITDA has improved by roughly A$51m, moving from a A$27.8m loss in FY23 to an annualised A$23.5m. The company has set long-term goals of 10%+ annual revenue growth, a 70%+ gross margin, and a 25%+ adjusted EBITDA margin. This quarter cleared its revenue-growth threshold while closing on the gross-margin and EBITDA-margin goals.
For operators and investors following the company, the next few quarters will show whether the operating leverage on display in Q1 FY27 becomes the steady baseline, as BetMakers continues to execute its technology-led growth strategy.
