Flutter Suspends Junglee After India Bans Real-Money Gaming
Flutter Entertainment has suspended Junglee’s operations in India effective 22 August, following the rapid passage of the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill. The legislation, which bans real-money games including skill-based formats was passed in record time, leaving no opportunity for consultation with stakeholders.
Flutter had projected $200m in revenue from its Indian business this year, but the sudden shutdown has forced management to assess non-cash impairments and long-term strategy shifts. CEO Peter Jackson highlighted concerns that banning skill-based games could drive players toward unregulated markets lacking consumer safeguards.
The impact extends beyond Flutter. Dream11, one of India’s leading fantasy platforms, has withdrawn as a key sponsor of national cricket teams, placing further financial strain on the BCCI. This development raises pressing questions about the future of both regulated iGaming and sports sponsorship in India.
