NBA Hall of Famer Chauncey Billups appeared in federal court in Brooklyn and pleaded not guilty to charges tied to an alleged illicit poker operation backed by organized crime. Billups faces counts of wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering after being arrested last month during a widespread FBI operation targeting illegal gambling networks. The former Portland Trail Blazers coach was released on a $5 million bond secured against his Colorado residence and agreed to passport surrender, travel restrictions, and oversight of financial transactions.

Prosecutors allege the poker scheme generated more than $7 million through at least 25 rigged high-stakes games. The hearing brought together 31 defendants linked to the poker case, along with others facing charges in a parallel sports betting indictment. The latter focuses on an alleged insider-information betting ring involving NBA injury reports, with former player Damon Jones and current Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier among those implicated.

Investigators say the poker games were organized and financially backed by members and associates of several mafia families, including the Genovese and Bonanno groups. Some defendants with alleged direct ties to organized crime were denied bail due to concerns over flight risk and criminal connections.

Given the number of defendants and the involvement of organized crime, the court has designated the matter as a complex case. Prosecutors expect to deliver more than a terabyte of discovery materials once a protective order is approved. Discussions are underway regarding potential plea negotiations, but no agreements have been finalized.

Judge Ramon Reyes scheduled the next status conference for March 4, marking the next stage in a high-profile legal battle that blends professional sports, illegal gambling, and organized crime.
