Meridianbet wins approval to launch online casino in Belgium

Meridianbet has secured a B+ online gaming licence in Belgium, clearing the way for the launch of its online casino products from January 2026. The approval marks a significant regulatory milestone for the operator, which has been active in the Belgian market for more than seven years through sports betting.

The B+ licence authorises Meridianbet to offer a full suite of online casino content, including slots, table games and automated live casino products. These will operate alongside its existing sportsbook, expanding the company’s local footprint in one of Europe’s most tightly controlled gambling jurisdictions.

Belgium’s online gambling sector is both highly regulated and heavily concentrated. Data from the Belgian Gaming Commission shows that the country generated €944.6m in online gross gaming revenue in 2023, representing year-on-year growth of 18%. Online casino accounted for €455m of that total, growing more than 20% and making it the largest digital gambling segment in the country.

Despite having two dozen active licence holders, the market is dominated by a small group of operators. Ten companies are responsible for the vast majority of online wagering, reflecting the high regulatory and compliance barriers to entry. Licensees must adhere to strict player protection measures, advertising controls and ongoing oversight.

Meridianbet stated that its Belgian online casino platform will be powered by proprietary AI-driven recommendation technology. The system is designed to analyse player behaviour and preferences to deliver personalised, real-time game suggestions within the limits of local regulation.

The licence strengthens Meridianbet’s position in regulated European markets and reflects a broader industry trend toward expansion through compliance-led growth in mature jurisdictions such as Belgium.
