30-Year Turning Point: Allwyn Delivers £450M Transformation in UK National Lottery History
Allwyn has completed a £450 million transformation of the UK National Lottery, marking the most significant upgrade in its 30-year history and accelerating its transition toward a digital-first operating model.
Allwyn’s Strategic Expansion into the UK Market
Allwyn, a leading multinational lottery operator with a growing presence across Europe, took over the UK National Lottery licence with a mandate to modernise infrastructure, enhance digital capabilities, and increase returns for Good Causes.
The transition represents a key milestone in the company’s broader strategy to scale regulated lottery operations through technology-led transformation, improved player engagement, and long-term value creation.
A 30-Year Evolution Reaches a Turning Point
Since its launch in 1994, the UK National Lottery has evolved into one of the world’s most established lottery systems, historically driven by a retail-first model supported by legacy infrastructure.
However, changing player expectations, the rise of digital channels, and the need to attract a new generation of players created the need for large-scale modernisation. Under Allwyn’s operation, the lottery has now entered a new phase focused on scalability, efficiency, and enhanced player engagement.
A Full-System Transformation at National Scale
Allwyn executed a comprehensive overhaul across retail, digital, and backend systems, delivering one of the most complex transitions in the global lottery sector.
The transformation included:
- Deployment of 30+ integrated technology systems
- Migration of 18 million player accounts
- Transfer of over 3 billion historical transactions
- Simultaneous modernisation of retail and digital platforms
- Full upgrade of core gaming and operational infrastructure
The programme was delivered while maintaining live operations, demonstrating the execution capability required for national-scale transitions.
Allwyn also achieved Fully Implemented Commencement (FIC) approval from the UK Gambling Commission, confirming full compliance with licence requirements.
Commercial Performance Reflects Early Impact
The transformation has already delivered measurable results.
In 2025, total National Lottery sales reached £8.1 billion, representing a 3.5% year-on-year increase. The operation generated £1.7 billion for Good Causes and contributed £967 million in Lottery Duty to the UK Treasury.
Key product performance included:
- EuroMillions generating £2.1 billion in annual sales
- Instant Win Games reaching £1.2 billion, up 10% year-on-year
These results reflect stronger product appeal, improved player engagement, and increased participation across both traditional and digital channels. This product-led growth strategy is further supported by recent leadership changes, including the appointment of Director of Games, reinforcing Allwyn’s focus on portfolio optimisation and game performance.
Digital Surpasses Retail for the First Time
A defining outcome of the transformation is the shift toward digital as the primary revenue driver.
Digital sales reached £4.1 billion, increasing 9.8% year-on-year, supported by 12.1 million active online players. For the first time, digital accounted for 51% of total National Lottery sales, overtaking retail.
Andria Vidler, CEO of Allwyn UK, commented:
“This transformation is about building a National Lottery that is fit for the future. By improving the player experience, expanding digital access, and strengthening returns to Good Causes, we are creating a platform for long-term, sustainable growth.”
The upgraded platform also supports broader player acquisition strategies, including attracting a new generation of digital-first lottery participants and enhancing overall player engagement.
Enhanced digital capabilities now enable:
- Improved user experience and onboarding
- Stronger player protection measures
- Faster rollout of new game formats
Retail Modernisation Strengthens Nationwide Access
Alongside digital growth, Allwyn completed a nationwide retail upgrade, replacing more than 41,000 legacy terminals with modern systems designed to improve speed, reliability, and operational efficiency.
Retail remains a key distribution channel, with 94% of UK adults located within one mile of a terminal, ensuring nationwide accessibility within a hybrid retail-digital model.
Setting a New Benchmark for Lottery Operators
Allwyn’s execution establishes a new benchmark for national lottery modernisation.
The transformation highlights:
- A successful transition toward a digital-first revenue model
- The ability to deliver large-scale system upgrades without operational disruption
- The importance of regulatory alignment in licence transitions
- The growing role of player-centric innovation in driving engagement
For lottery operators globally, this development reinforces the need to modernise legacy systems while balancing retail presence and evolving player expectations.
Long-Term Growth and Funding Ambitions
With its new infrastructure fully operational, Allwyn is now focused on scaling long-term returns and expanding player reach.
The operator aims to double weekly funding for Good Causes from £30 million to £60 million by 2034, supported by continued digital expansion, product innovation, and increased participation from a broader player base.
