Alberta is set to become Canada’s second province to allow private online casinos and sportsbooks following the passage of Bill 48. The new law lays the groundwork for a regulated iGaming ecosystem, ending the monopoly of government-run Play Alberta and addressing widespread activity in grey and black markets.
At the Canadian Gaming Summit, Minister Dale Nally announced that Alberta plans to finalize advertising standards and tax rates this fall, with a market launch anticipated for early next year.
Key steps include:
- Formation of the Alberta iGaming Corporation as a new regulatory body
- Consultations with land-based casinos, First Nations, and private operators
- Regulatory decisions on advertising, including athlete endorsements
Once operational, Alberta will join Ontario in offering legal market access to private iGaming brands in Canada.
