Over 30 sports organisations across New Zealand have come together to challenge the proposed Online Casino Gambling Bill. Their concern? The legislation excludes any provision to support community funding, risking the loss of nearly NZ$170 million currently provided via gaming machine grants.
Local and national clubs argue the bill threatens grassroots sport by allowing online casinos to operate without contributing back to the community. With many clubs already struggling due to economic pressures, the potential loss of this funding could be devastating.
Despite intentions to regulate offshore operators and enhance consumer protections, the bill’s failure to replicate the existing grant model is drawing sharp criticism. The legislation has passed its first reading and is under select committee review but stakeholders are pushing for urgent changes before it’s too late.
