Matt Bowyer, one of the nation’s most notorious illegal bookmakers, has officially reported to federal prison in California to begin a one-year sentence. Known for handling more than $325 million in wagers from Shohei Ohtani’s former interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, Bowyer’s conviction stems from operating an unlicensed gambling enterprise, money laundering, and falsifying tax information.
The sentencing follows months of intense media attention surrounding Bowyer’s connection to Mizuhara, who embezzled nearly $17 million from Ohtani to repay gambling debts. While Mizuhara received a 57-month sentence earlier this year, Bowyer’s one-year term was accompanied by over $1.5 million in restitution and back tax obligations.
In the weeks leading up to his imprisonment, Bowyer promoted his book “Recalibrate” across numerous podcasts and major broadcast platforms, aiming to reshape his public image and share lessons from his downfall. His case, widely discussed at the 2025 Global Gaming Expo (G2E), reignited debate over compliance and anti-money laundering measures across regulated gaming sectors.
As Bowyer begins his term at FCI Lompoc, he plans to use his time for reflection, physical training, and writing. Upon release, he hopes to advocate for responsible gambling and caution athletes and bettors against the dangers of unregulated play.
This case stands as a clear signal to the global gaming community: compliance and integrity remain non-negotiable pillars of the iGaming industry’s future.
