South Africa’s gambling market has reached an all-time high, recording R1.5 trillion ($86 billion) in turnover for the 2024/25 financial year, according to the National Gambling Board (NGB). The figure represents a 36% increase from the previous year’s R1.1 trillion and highlights the accelerating dominance of online betting across the country.

Gross gambling revenue (GGR) rose to R75 billion ($4.3 billion), with betting accounting for 70% of that amount. Casinos contributed R16.6 billion, reflecting a slight 4.1% decline attributed to the closure of some slot and table facilities. The NGB noted that many players have transitioned from physical slot machines to online platforms, continuing a trend that began during the pandemic.

Beyond the financial numbers, the industry remains a key driver of employment and tax revenue. It supports over 177,000 direct and indirect jobs and generated R5.8 billion in taxes and levies during the year. The Western Cape emerged as the largest provincial contributor, showcasing the regional strength of the gambling economy.

Yet, the report also underscores growing social concerns. Over half of working South Africans now gamble, and problem gambling prevalence has reached 31%. Gambling expenditure accounts for 1.6% of total household spending, reflecting its deep penetration into consumer behavior.

As online betting cements its dominance, the NGB faces the challenge of fostering responsible growth. The record turnover confirms South Africa’s status as one of the most dynamic iGaming markets globally, but one that must balance innovation with regulation to ensure sustainable expansion.
