The Scientific Games CEO retirement was confirmed this week: Pat McHugh will step down on 8 September 2026, ending a run of more than 20 years at the company and a lottery career stretching back three decades. The board has named director Kevin Schneider as interim chief executive and opened a search for a permanent successor. McHugh will stay on as an advisory Vice Chair to help the transition. Why the Scientific Games CEO retirement matters now

Scientific Games sits at the centre of the global lottery supply chain – technology, systems, retail and digital products relied on by lottery operators across many markets. When a supplier that central changes its chief executive, the first thing customers want is continuity. That is exactly what the announcement is built to deliver: early notice, a named interim, and the outgoing CEO retained in an advisory seat rather than gone overnight.

McHugh’s own words framed the timing as deliberate. He said announcing his retirement now allows the board “to conduct an open search for the best leader to guide the company through its next phase of growth while ensuring a smooth leadership transition.” Read plainly, that is a company choosing order over speed.

What the leadership change actually involves

The facts are straightforward. McHugh retires on 8 September after joining Scientific Games in 2004 as VP of North American Operations, rising through roles including President of North America Lottery Systems and Chief Executive of the Lottery Division before being named CEO in 2022. His lottery career began at GTECH in 1992.

Schneider steps in on an interim basis. He has served on the board since 2022 and became Vice Chair in March 2026. His executive track record is in regulated finance – former COO of Genworth Financial, President and CEO of its US and global mortgage insurance businesses, with earlier roles at GE Capital and GATX. Chairman David Nowak said the board “has initiated the search for our next CEO and has full confidence in Kevin to lead the company as Interim CEO.”

The operator read: what the search signals

Here’s the part lottery customers care about. Nothing in the announcement points to a change in strategy or service in the near term – the interim structure exists precisely to hold the line. But the choice of caretaker is worth noting. Rather than elevating an operating executive with lottery experience, the board selected a director whose background is regulated finance, and paired that with an open external search.

That pattern usually reads one way: a company keeping its options wide before committing to a long-term leader. For an operator or lottery customer, the practical implication is simple. Expect continuity of contracts and roadmap through the transition, and watch the eventual appointment for the real signal on direction.

The caveat worth naming

An interim CEO is, by definition, a placeholder. Schneider will lead until a permanent successor is appointed, and the announcement gives no timeline for that search. Extended interim periods can slow big decisions, and a leader without lottery operating experience will lean heavily on the existing team. None of that is a problem stated in the announcement – but it is the open question the structure creates.

The search that decides the direction

The next six to twelve months turn on one decision: who the board names as permanent CEO. That choice will say more about Brookfield’s intentions for the lottery business – four years on from its 2022 acquisition – than any interim arrangement can.
