From Scientific Games to Light & Wonder: How a Gaming Giant Reinvented Itself
Light & Wonder’s story is not simply about changing a corporate name. It is about changing what the company wanted to be.
On 1 March 2022, Scientific Games announced it would do business as Light & Wonder, with a stated ambition to become the leading cross-platform global game company. The strategy centred on creating games and franchises that could move across land-based casinos, online, mobile and free-to-play social gaming. That repositioning created the foundation for the business Light & Wonder operates today.
Cross-platform gaming and the shift shaping the industry
The gaming industry has become increasingly interconnected. Players no longer experience casino content through one channel alone. A successful franchise can move between physical casinos, online platforms, mobile products and social gaming environments.
Light & Wonder built its strategy around that reality, which is what makes the rebrand more than a cosmetic exercise.
Inside the Scientific Games rebrand to Light & Wonder
The transition followed what the company called a year-long strategic process and a series of bold strategic moves, including the planned divestitures of its Lottery and Sports Betting businesses. The name change was made in connection with the sale of the Lottery business, and the legal name and ticker change from Scientific Games to Light & Wonder completed in April 2022, when the stock began trading on NASDAQ under the ticker LNW.
“We are thrilled to introduce the world to Light & Wonder, a company that will build great games and franchises that offer players a seamless experience across platforms,” said Barry Cottle, the company’s CEO at the time of the announcement. The intention was to concentrate the company around games, content, technology and the player experience, connecting iconic titles across any place or channel.
Gaming, iGaming and SciPlay under one strategy
Today, Light & Wonder operates through three unique, yet highly complementary businesses covering Gaming, iGaming and SciPlay. The company describes itself as a cross-platform global games business focused on creating immersive content and lasting connections with players.
That structure gives it exposure across several parts of the gaming ecosystem rather than relying on a single distribution model. Its gaming operations connect with traditional casino environments, iGaming extends the reach into online gaming, and SciPlay provides exposure to social gaming. The underlying logic is less about separating gaming categories and more about creating content that can travel between them.
Matt Wilson leads Light & Wonder’s next chapter
Barry Cottle led the company at the point of the rebrand. Matt Wilson became President and CEO in October 2022 and now leads that strategy forward. For Light & Wonder, the focus now is less about establishing the cross-platform strategy and more about executing it.
Innovation and player experience at the centre of Light & Wonder
Light & Wonder frames constant innovation as central to its success and puts the player experience at the centre of product development. That philosophy aligns with the broader transformation. If games are increasingly expected to work across multiple channels, innovation cannot stop with the content itself. It has to extend to technology, distribution, integration and the overall player experience.
What the Light & Wonder transformation signals for gaming
Light & Wonder’s evolution shows how established gaming companies are adapting to an industry where the boundaries between land-based, online, mobile and social gaming are increasingly blurred.
Scientific Games provided the foundation. The Light & Wonder strategy changed the direction. Now the company’s next step is turning that cross-platform structure into a sustained competitive advantage.
For operators and suppliers, that makes Light & Wonder’s story worth following, not simply because of what the company has become, but because of what its transformation says about where the wider gaming industry is heading.
