Seven suspects have been arrested in the Philippines following an inter-agency operation that dismantled an illegal online gambling operation in Quezon City. The raid, carried out by the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) with support from the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO), marks another step in the country’s broader campaign to protect its citizens from unlawful digital activities.
Authorities seized mobile phones and related equipment believed to have been used to run the unauthorized operations. The suspects are now facing charges under the Cybercrime Prevention Act (Republic Act 10175), Presidential Decree No. 1602 on illegal gambling, and other applicable laws.
DICT Secretary Henry Aguda explained that the operation was in line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to clean up cyberspace of illegal activities. “Today’s successful apprehension is a realization of that directive,” he said, emphasizing that inter-agency cooperation strengthens enforcement capabilities.
CICC Acting Executive Director Atty. Renato Paraiso underscored the importance of urgency in these operations, citing the need to protect vulnerable sectors of society from exploitation. He noted that even seemingly small illegal operators can cause significant harm over time, making it essential to pursue such cases relentlessly.
The PCSO reiterated its stance that illegal gambling undermines government health and charity programs by diverting revenues intended for public benefit. It also warned that Filipinos who engage with such platforms risk financial fraud and exploitation.
Lawmakers welcomed the operation, with Rep. Brian Poe praising the collaboration and calling for sustained support to ensure that agencies can continue these efforts effectively. Forensic analysis of seized devices is expected to uncover broader networks linked to the illegal operation. Authorities confirmed that similar nationwide crackdowns will follow as part of the government’s campaign to safeguard the public and strengthen the integrity of the online environment.
