Exclusive: Gil Soffer Shares His Entrepreneurial Journey | iGaming News Today

A rare first-person account from inside the gaming industry – told not as a success formula, but as the messy reality of building through its shifts.

Gil Soffer, a longtime figure in the gaming industry, has released a memoir titled Diary of an Entrepreneur, tracing a life lived across four continents and the entrepreneurial journey that eventually led him into the gaming industry. It is positioned deliberately as a memoir rather than a business guide – a personal account of the doubts, mistakes and turns behind an entrepreneurial path, rather than a set of instructions for replicating one. For a sector that produces far more theory than lived testimony, that framing is where its trade relevance sits.

Why This Entrepreneurial Memoir Matters Now

The iGaming industry has no shortage of commentary, but very little of it comes from the people who actually founded and ran the businesses. Soffer’s account offers a personal perspective on entrepreneurship, shaped by years of navigating change, uncertainty and business challenges. The value for readers is the firsthand view of the experiences and decisions that shaped his entrepreneurial journey.

What the book actually involves

The memoir spans Soffer’s early life across the Central African Republic, Chad, Israel, Europe and the United States, his law degree and MBA – including study at the École des Ponts – and a period serving as a young military prosecutor. He talks about his rich entrepreneurial career in Telecom but the book’s narrative ends in 2007, with Soffer noting that the years since are too significant to compress and may warrant a separate volume. The memoir doesn’t cover his experience on the gaming side, but this he will share in an additional volume in which he will  recount launching online poker and experimenting with 3D interfaces at a moment when many believed 3D was the future of the medium. That bet taught him an early lesson he still holds to: in his words, “players didn’t want complexity; they wanted speed, clarity, and reliability.”

The operator read

What Soffer describes as his central realisation is one most people in the industry will recognise – that gaming sits at the intersection of technology, regulation and human psychology, and that navigating all three at once is the real job. His stated lessons are unglamorous and practical: secure proper financial backing, expect the business to move in cycles, and never assume a period of success will last. “Success is temporary; reinvention is permanent,” he writes. For operators, the useful signal here isn’t inspiration – it’s the reminder that endurance and capital discipline tend to outlast talent alone.

The caveat worth naming

This is one man’s account, and it should be read as such. Among the claims in the supporting material is Soffer’s statement that “Only 1% of entrepreneurs manage to sell their company to a publicly traded corporation. I’m proud to have beaten the odds” – a reference to a significant business outcome that is not, in this material, tied to a named company, buyer or date. It is presented here as Soffer’s own statement rather than a verified fact, and the “1%” figure is his framing rather than a sourced statistic. Readers should treat the memoir as a personal narrative, not an audited record.

Future outlook

Soffer says that after 18 years in the industry he is considering a second book dedicated entirely to gaming – its successes, failures, regulatory battles and technological waves. If that volume materialises, it would cover the period the current memoir deliberately leaves out, and would likely be the more directly industry-facing of the two. For now, Diary of an Entrepreneur stands as a first instalment: a personal foundation more than an industry chronicle, with the sector-specific account still to come.
