Exclusive: Tom Light of FIRST.bet on Future of Sports Betting | iGaming News Today

The sports betting industry is evolving faster than ever, driven by advances in artificial intelligence, changing player expectations, and increasing competition across regulated markets. Today’s operators need more than a feature-rich sportsbook – they need technology, partnerships, and innovation that create better player experiences and long-term business growth.

In this exclusive interview with iGaming News Today, FIRST.bet Founder and CEO Tom Light shares insights from his journey across operators and suppliers, discusses how AI is transforming sportsbook technology, explains what players expect from modern betting experiences, and outlines the trends that will shape the future of sports betting.

Q1. You’ve worked across operators, suppliers, and now as CEO of FIRST.bet. How has that diverse experience shaped the way you lead the business today?

Tom:

Sports betting is one of the most complex businesses in gaming. You can’t lead a sportsbook supplier from an ivory tower.

To build a great product, you need to understand every part of the ecosystem. Throughout my career I’ve worked closely with operators, suppliers, product teams and commercial teams, and that experience taught me how everything connects.

You need to understand player behavior, VIP management, bonusing, risk management, fraud and abuse, integrations, customer support, trading, regulation, and ultimately how operators actually make money.

Sportsbook isn’t an isolated product. For many operators it’s also an acquisition engine that drives their wider business.

Even today, as CEO, I’m still involved in customer meetings, product discussions, integration calls and operational reviews.

Staying close to our clients and our teams keeps me learning every day, and that helps us make better decisions much faster than companies where leadership is disconnected from the product and the customer.

Q2. FIRST.bet is focused on delivering sportsbook solutions in a highly competitive market. What do you believe sets FIRST.bet apart ?

Tom:

The biggest difference is that we don’t just deliver a Tier 1 product. We deliver a Tier 1 partnership.

Many suppliers provide software. Very few help operators actually become market leaders.

Our job isn’t to tick feature boxes. It’s to help operators compete against the strongest brands in every regulated market.

That means working side by side with our customers. We help them optimize their sportsbook, improve player engagement, increase retention, fine tune promotions, maximize margins and continuously improve performance.

We succeed when our operators succeed.

The second difference is our philosophy around product.

Today, sportsbook isn’t about whether you have Bet Builder, Cash Out or Early Payout. Everyone can say they have those features.

The question is how well they’re built. How many markets does Bet Builder support? How accurate is the pricing? How fast is it? How often is Cash Out available? How reliable is it during live events? How easy is it for operators to configure and personalize the experience?

Every feature is about execution, not availability.

That’s where the real difference is made.

Q3. Sports bettors are becoming more knowledgeable and demanding. What do you think players expect from sportsbooks today that they didn’t expect five years ago?

Tom:

Players expect far more personalization, speed and control than they did a few years ago.

They want instant bet placement, instant settlement, personalized offers and a product that feels tailored to them.

They also expect to create their own betting experience through features like Bet Builder, Cash Out, same-game combinations and dynamic promotions instead of simply choosing from a fixed list of markets.

The expectation has shifted from simply placing a bet to having a complete entertainment experience around sport.

Q4. AI is becoming a key part of sports betting. How do you see AI transforming the industry over the next few years?

Tom:

I think AI will fundamentally change the role of sportsbook suppliers.

Historically, suppliers delivered both the backend engine and much of the frontend experience.

Going forward, AI will allow operators to build highly personalized frontends while suppliers increasingly become the intelligence and transaction engine behind the scenes.

At FIRST.bet we’ve already started moving in that direction with SportOS, giving operators much greater control over how they build and present their sportsbook while we provide the underlying infrastructure, pricing, trading and execution.

AI will personalize everything, from content and promotions to market presentation and player journeys, making every sportsbook feel unique rather than identical.

Q5. As sports betting continues to expand globally, how do you balance innovation with responsible gaming and regulatory compliance?

Tom:

Innovation always comes first because that’s what moves the industry forward.

But innovation has to be developed responsibly.

Every new feature we build is designed alongside our compliance and regulatory teams to ensure it fits within the requirements of each jurisdiction and supports responsible gaming.

The best innovation isn’t simply something new.

It’s something operators can confidently deploy knowing it’s compliant, sustainable and built for long-term success.

Those two things shouldn’t compete with each other.

They should evolve together.

Q6. You’ve led teams across different countries and companies. What qualities define a successful leader in today’s gaming industry?

Tom:

The most important quality is leading by example.

I don’t expect anyone to work harder than I do. People see that I’m deeply involved in the business every day, whether it’s customers, product, operations or strategy.

Leadership isn’t about telling people what to do. It’s about setting the standard through your own actions.

The second quality is staying curious.

This industry changes incredibly fast, so leaders have to keep learning, stay close to customers and never assume they already know all the answers.

Q7. Looking toward 2027 and beyond, what major trends will shape the future of sports betting?

Tom:

The biggest trend will continue to be user experience.

Players will expect faster products, more personalization and much greater control over how they bet.

We’ll see more AI-driven experiences, more personalized frontends, richer live betting, faster settlement, more responsive Cash Out and increasingly sophisticated Bet Builders that allow players to create their own narratives around sporting events.

Sportsbooks will become less transactional and much more interactive and entertaining.

The companies that combine speed, personalization and innovation while maintaining operational excellence will be the ones that lead the market over the next decade.
