Betsson Group Launches the Betsson Foundation to Unite Its Community and Sports Work

Betsson Group Launches Betsson Foundation | iGaming News Today

Betsson Group has launched the Betsson Foundation, a registered public benefit foundation that brings the operator’s charitable, community and sports-related initiatives together under a single organisation. The Foundation is positioned as the next step in what the Group describes as a long-standing commitment to creating positive impact across its markets and office locations.

What makes the move worth a closer look is not the goodwill itself, which Betsson has shown for years, but the structure around it. The Foundation has been incorporated in Malta as a separate legal entity, giving the operator’s social work a formal home rather than leaving it spread across employee fundraisers, grassroots projects and partner-led campaigns.

Why the Betsson Foundation matters now

For a gaming operator, how community work is organised says something about intent. Betsson has long tied its brand to sport through football clubs and athlete partnerships, and much of its community activity has flowed through those relationships. Pulling everything into one coordinated body signals a shift from occasional contribution to sustained programme. The Group says the Foundation will serve as the central organisation for coordinating and scaling its social impact activities, working with employees, partners and local organisations.

What the Betsson Foundation actually involves

The Foundation is designed to bring existing and new initiatives under a shared framework, with the stated aim of strengthening collaboration and knowledge sharing while increasing the long-term impact of the work. Sport will remain a central focus, and the Foundation intends to leverage Betsson’s global sports partnerships to widen the reach of its initiatives. One early example is its support for Boosting Up, a five-year programme in Peru that backs 22 participants from a school in Lima through football, English-language education and nutritional support.

The Betsson Operations view on sport and community

Leadership framed the launch around Betsson’s sporting identity. “Sport and community engagement have long been part of Betsson’s DNA. The launch of the Betsson Foundation strengthens our ability to support the people, programmes and organisations making a positive difference in our communities. It also gives us the opportunity to work even more closely with our clubs and athlete partners to connect the power and reach of sport with meaningful community initiatives”, said Jesper Svensson, CEO of Betsson Operations.

The ESG leadership struck a similar note on longevity. “Through the Betsson Foundation, we aim to create lasting positive impact by supporting worthy causes, fostering long-term partnerships, and bringing together initiatives that strengthen communities across our locations”, said Jonna Danlund, Director of ESG.

Governance and accountability for the gaming operator’s foundation

The detail that separates this from a rebranding exercise is the governance model. The Betsson Foundation operates under a framework comprising the founding company, a Board of Administrators and a Supervisory Council. The Group says this structure provides oversight and accountability while supporting the Foundation in pursuing its philanthropic objectives and managing its activities responsibly and in line with applicable legal requirements. For an operator in a heavily regulated sector, building that oversight in from the start is a deliberate choice.

What Does This Mean for the Regulated Gaming Market?

Betsson’s move reflects a wider reality for the regulated gaming market, where an operator’s social footprint is increasingly part of how it is judged by regulators, partners and the public. Formalising community work inside a governed legal entity turns scattered goodwill into something that can be measured, reported and scaled, which is harder to dismiss than a run of one-off donations. Whether the Foundation delivers on that promise will depend on the scale of commitment behind it, something this announcement does not yet quantify. For now, the clearest takeaway is that a leading operator has chosen to put accountability at the centre of its community work, and that choice will set a reference point others in the sector are likely to be measured against.
